Rakhay Rakhan Har

The mantra Rakhay Rakhan Har
as given by Guru Arjan,
Subtly attunes you to Divine Protection
And eliminates all sorrow.

Celestial Communication is a meditative way
Of expressing its deepest meaning
That engages body, mind, heart and soul in unison.

The divine essence of words is clearly and easily conveyed

By
simply watching and listening.
Copying the motions and singing with the meaning
Gives a sublime, sacred experience.

Rakhay Rakhan Har
A Prayer of Divine Protection

The Adi Shakti symbol, or Khanda, represents the female power with a double-edged sword within a circle of God, protected by two outer swords. Meditation on this symbol gives fearlessness.
Adi Shakti Symbol

Rakhay Rakhan Har - Mantra and Yoga Movements

RAKHAY (Protecting)
Begin with the arms raised two feet apart in a graceful arc above the head, palms facing inwards.

On the word “Rakhay” sweep your hands down so that the wrists cross in front of the abdomen.
(You are tracing the two protective, outer swords of the Adi Shakti Symbol)

RAKHAN HAR (Protector Lord)
Bring the arms up so that the fingertips meet in an arc above the head.
(You are outlining a Chakar, the Circle of Infinity within the Adi Shakti Symbol)

AAP (You)
Collapse the arms and hands down so that the elbows meet at the level of the chin, forearms pressed side by side, and both hands face you pointing upwards, left hand over the right hand.
(This creates a Khanda, a double-edged sword that cuts away negativity to either side)

UBAARIAN (have liberated us)
Lower the elbows so that the hands face the face.
(You are lowering the Khanda to your heart, the center of the Adi Shakti Symbol)

GUR KEE PAIREE PAA-AY (By reaching to touch Guru’s feet)
Bowing slightly, stretch the hands forward. (As if to touch Guru’s feet)

KAAJ (our work)
Bend elbows, bringing hands face down in front of you. (Feel all the work you do beneath your hands)

SAVAARIAN (is set right)
Flip the hands to face upwards. (Given to the Guru, feel all your work set right for you, effortlessly)

HOAA AAP DYAAL (Your Mercy is within me)
Place your hands one over the other on top of your heart. (Feel God’s Mercy in your heart)

MANHO NA VISAARIAN (oh mind, do not forget)
Bow your head to acknowledge the Divine within you. (Oh my mind, never forget God within me.)

SAADH JANAA KAI SANG (In the company of saintly people)
Stretch your hands out to your sides to hold hands with people on each side of you, even in imagination.
(Feel as though your are holding hands with saintly people around the world)

BAVJAL TAARIAN (we cross life's rough waters)
Holding hands, or pretending to, wave the arms gracefully up and down to create the sensation of waves. (By staying together we overcome the rough currents of life)

SAAKAT (Worldly insane mass murderers)
From holding hands, let go and cross your forearms down in front of you.
(As though X-ing out all murderers)

NINDAK (slanderers)
Uncross the arms by pivoting from your elbows out to the sides, hands facing forward.
(Totally dispelling all slander)

DUSHT (demons)
Forcefully bring your hands face down in front of you. (As though squashing demons)

KHIN MAA-HAY (in a second)
Flip the hands to face upwards and quickly stretch your arms upwards, palms up.
(In a second all negative energies are lifted to the heavens)

BIDAARIAN (are destroyed)
Keeping the arms extended and wrists bent back, sweep the arms down to the sides in an arc.
(Dispelling all darkness in God’s Light)

TIS SAAHIB KEE TAYK (Whoever reaches for God’s Touch)
Sweep the arms up over the head, palms together.
(Reaching for the sublime, clasping it with hands folded in prayer)

NAANAK MANAI MAAHAY (Oh Nanak, within the mind)
Smoothly lower the folded hands to the level of your forhead.
(Feel God’s Divine Presence within your mind)

JIS SIMARAT (that one who remembers)
Continue lowering the folded hands to be in front of your heart.
(Sing of and remember God’s Divine Presence within your heart)

SUKH HO-AY (becomes peaceful)
Keeping the outer edges of your hands together, unfold your hands like a book.
(Feel peace flooding your consciousness like the subtle fragrance of a flower)

SAGALAY (All)
Palms facing you, pivot the hands middle-fingertip-to-middle-fingertip, parallel to you.
(Gathering up all)

DOOKH (affliction, suffering)
Flip the hands to face outwards and raise them upwards.
(Feel all your suffering being lifted away)

JAA-HAY (goes)
Arms stretched straight overhead, sweep them in a graceful arc out to the sides.
(Feel all suffering going away, given to God)

These movements were designed by four and five year old girls with my guidance at Khalsa Children's Camp in the eighties, at the same time as women down the hill at Khalsa Women's Training Camp were designing celestial communication for the mantra under Yogiji's direction. I have modified it a bit since then, making some movements more self-explanatory.
